Auditory Processing Disorder (APD) is a condition that is unable to properly process sounds that are heard due to an error in coordination between the ear and the brain. This condition results in sufferers often misinformation.
This disorder is not the same as being deaf. Auditory Processing Disorder generally occurs since childhood and cases in boys are more than girls.
Cause.
The cause of Auditory Processing Disorder (PPE) is unknown. The trigger factors :
- Glue ear.
- Genetic.
- Premature birth.
- Head injury.
- Brain hemorrhage.
- Brain tumor.
- Meningitis.
- Stroke.
- Multiple sclerosis.
- Jaundice.
- Lead poisoning.
Symptoms.
Auditory Processing Disorder (PPE) Symptoms :
- Difficulty understanding conversation, especially in crowded places.
- Difficulty distinguishing words with similar sounds.
- Difficulty to find a sound source.
- Difficulty remembering commands.
- It's hard to enjoy music.
Auditory Processing Disorder is associated with other diseases, such as :
- Dyslexia.
- Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD).
Diagnosis.
- The hearing test is done in a quiet room.
- Test the patient's ability to hear sounds with different noises.
- Test your hearing ability when talking to fast-talking people.
- Test your listening skills when speaking with people with different accents.
- Test listening skills when talking to people whose voice quality is not good.
- Assess the patient's speech and language skills.
- Psychological test.
- Electrode test to evaluate the brain's response to sound.
Treatment.
Auditory Processing Disorder cannot be treated, but with the right response it will hone the patient's listening ability so that it builds good communication skills.
A person's hearing ability is not fully developed until he is 15 years old, so that is the right time to improve listening ability by :
- Speech recognition exercises, look for sound sources and get used to concentrating on one sound point in a crowd.
- Exercise memory and problem solving skills.
